James Braid

James Braid designed and oversaw the building of Kingswood whilst living and serving as Head Professional at Walton Heath, a post he held for 45 years. Braid lived barely a mile from Kingswood and could give the course his closest attention.

Arguably the finest golfer to hail from Scotland, James Braid achieved greatness in two separate golfing careers.

Firstly as a golfer he was one of the famed Great Triumvirate along with Vardon and Taylor, who dominated the game between 1890 and 1914. Braid captured The Open Championship five times between 1901 and 1910.

As a golfing champion he was asked to consult on many of the new courses being built in England and Scotland and after retiring from golf competition in 1912, he turned to his second career as a golf course architect.

The legacy of his wonderful imagination are many fine courses that have become classics and will be enjoyed for generations to come. His well-known designs include Carnoustie, Gleneagles, Hoylake and St Enedoc but he also had a large hand in the re-designing and renovation of many more, a list that includes celebrated courses such as Ballybunion, Royal Troon and Royal Blackheath.

Braid courses bear many trademarks in their design. It has been noted that his courses “always seem to be on lovely sites with splendid views”. He has been credited with designing some of the first known doglegs and a further hallmark was his fondness for including strategically placed cross bunkers.

Kingswood has matured well over the past eight decades into a very fine course that benefited immensely from the close attention of one of golf’s all time greats.

I booked it as a Christmas present to myself and my two son in laws and my son. They were so helpful in tailoring the present to exactly what I wanted . The day itself from the moment we got there to the end was fantastic, the courteous service , the welcome , the golf course was all first class and the dining was at another level again if that's possible . A brilliant day and I know what all four of us will be getting next year for Christmas .

Great course, beautiful countryside setting, with incredibly hospitable friendly members who hosted us in a fourball on our first visit. Stunning locker room facilities and a great club house, with views.

Took a friend here for the 1st time, he came down from London to play. He has only started playing recently so I was worried that it might be a bit tough for him, but he loved it! So much in fact he took membership details! Food at the halfway house was excellent and the beers afterwards went down a treat. Really good atmosphere in the club house too. Changing rooms are superb. Staff in the pro shop and the clubhouse were on the ball too. Would recommend it to any golfer.

Our group of four stayed at Kingswood for two nights and three rounds of golf, staff were brilliant, always polite. The course itself was great, very demanding but one that we enjoyed, food was excellent and the staff polite. We all agreed that the stay there was relaxing and fun and we would definitely go back and enjoy the great surroundings.

Love this course. Fairways immaculate and playing beautifully. Greens running true but difficult to read. For £39 mid week afternoon it's great value for a lovely members course.

"Kingswood Golf club offer a free 4-ball every month through their website. My friends and I played the course after winning the March draw. Despite the recent wet weather the course provided a good challenge. We were made very welcome by the staff in the pro-shop and also by the starter. The course is challenging for the higher handicapper but the pleasant surroundings make it an enjoyable four hours."

"Played golf in a Match on 15th September 2015 for Copthorne Vets v Kingswood Old Britains. Loved the golf course? long but relatively flat. A tough challenge for all levels of golfers off either the yellows or for the better player the longer whites. The new changing rooms and showers are a great addition and the rest of the clubhouse is first class. Highly recommended for a society day out. I look forward to returning in 2016."
